For starters, a list of potential features for different sections of the NMC Community site. each site should be separately "themed" (template) with some unifying common elements (color, logo) etc to tie to the main site.

Overall aspects:

  • NMC is a destination to go to for resources, ideas, collaboration
  • All content is "tagged" so everything can be found by traditional tree-like browsing, folksonomic tag browsing, and keyword search. Drupal content can be tagged by the content creator, but is there a module that allows registered users to also tag (or rate) content??
  • Make use of graphics generously- include more photos of people interacting, and of NMC "places"
  • a bit more use of solid color to differentiate content and function- it is all overly bright right now
  • provide rich media
  • Everything that can generate RSS does generate RSS
  • Web 2.0-ish? - perhaps logged in users can customize the types of information pushed to their front page

Some things to keep in mind:

Main Site 1.0

  • Information dynmically "pushed" / syndicated from other areas -- the front page should never have to be edited. Content is generated by activity, dates of all sub sitess, and may include the following, or some combination of fixed items and a random spotlight of other items
    • news/ anouncements from NMC
    • Upcoming events from calendar dataase, link to full calendar
    • NMC generated podcasts
    • random spotlights of Member projects
    • NMC members rss aggregator feeds (news/ and/or podcasts)
    • random submited resources "tagged" by members
    • updates/news from NMC Campus Second Life Project
    • updates/news/samples from Marcus Project
    • sample Pachyderm projects
    • updates/news on Horizon project
    • random feature/story from Corporate member
    • random testimony from Member
  • For first time visitors - make it very clear on the first page what NMC is, what we do...
  • NMC history (??) or About section or "What is NMC?"
    • See Rachel's diagram (PDF) re-casting the NMC Core Competencies Matrix into a possible web dynamic overview of NMC - Convene, Catalize, build Community, Create tracks.
  • Single logon for anyone using NMC site (with indicator of already logged in)
  • More photos of people not just icons
  • Link to members only area
  • main navigation with drop down menu links to:
    • Projects - further linkages or one page deeper for specific projects
    • Events - upcoming and archive, event registration, highlights
    • Membership - information for prospective members, benefits, highlights; this is public viewable and would include content that is entered via the Member Tools below

Need a way to manage media associated with all projects, events, into a main library that is searchable, browsable by descriptor info or media type-

  • title
  • name of submitter (via Drupal uer id)
  • type of media included (PDF, PowerPoint, weblink, Word doc, video file, audio file...)
  • project/event association (taxonomy??)

NMC Projects 1.0 High level overviews of projects, pulled highlights that lead deeper to specific project areas and archives. Can use taxonomy of current project organization (?)

Basic starter list of possible tools needed to be available as options include:

  • main page with aggregation of content
  • news postings (page or blog type) external comments?
  • aggregator of outside feeds
  • discussion forums (open and/or private)
  • calendar
  • photo gallery (drawn from flickr?)
  • upload / post meterial to content library
  • project gallery (image and description for examples)
  • audio/video content (via link, but with descriptive info)

Events Site 1.0

  • database driven calendar for future/past NMC events
  • registration system for events to replace current filemaker version
  • random Testimonials, highlights
  • all past conference presentations posted, and a way for presenters to return to add updates, etc. A new system goes into place for conferences. A proposal is created by presenter as Drupal node (not public pre-conference). Approved sessions are then assembled into an online conference program. Presenters can attach additional media, links etc at any time. Once made public, materials are then open to comments.

Content would only be visible if they are logged in, offer a log in box if not logged in previously.

  • post members with pictures so we can recognize next time we meet! (part of the account creation/profile creation)
  • Job Announcements - place for members to both post and search
  • Add a podcast feeds from member sites-- the aggregated content would be a public available resource?
  • Aggregate of content from member sites vis RSS
  • Collection of grant opportunities for technology in education, perhaps with comments from places that have received awards?
  • blog roll of members or member sites (and aggregate RSS feeds)
  • Publishing tool for members to post content on main site as news, highlights, spotlights from their center
  • Publish a "profile" of each center or each corporate partners; randomize publish to NMC main site membership area. Add a tool for the member site to be linked via a Google Map
  • Build our own del.icio.us as resource sharing strategy, e.g. Scuttle members would be able to ad/tag resources that are publicly available on other parts of the site
  • Create a Monthly Topic discussion area where members could post and share resources, e.g. capture what is bantered now on the listserv
  • Results of Member surveys + discussions (news- blog or story)
  • collection of training documents we can use a template to share to pdf, share code, rate quality (content library)
  • member "suggestion box" for suggestions directed at NMC and it's various roles.
